The Commemorative March
The Commemorative March begins at 10:30 A.M. outside the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Marchers gather on Rosa Parks Way, near the door of the Harriet Tubman Theater. A brief service by local religious leaders begins the March. Marchers walk up Vine Street to Fountain Square for a short program, then on to Music Hall.
The brief Fountain Square program will begin at 11:00. The Jumbotron visible from Fountain Square will display special video footage of Dr. King for those who choose to begin the march there. The brief program will offer prayers and reflections on the message of Dr. King before moving on again to Music Hall. Individuals, families, school and church groups, and members of civic organizations join in this mile-long walk. They march as an act of solidarity with those who marched to win the freedoms we know today, and with those who still struggle to have their freedoms recognized. Brisk steps keep marchers warm even on a cold winter day. Singing songs reminiscent the Civil Rights marches of the ‘60s, marchers share the fellowship of people dedicated to Dr. King’s message: "No one is free, until everyone is free!"
