Collaboration with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center |
The Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition has been honored to collaborate with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on a number of events and forums. The Coalition offers its support for the Freedom Center’s upcoming exhibition, Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America. The exhibition will be on display from January 19 through May 31, 2010 in the Freedom Center's Jack H. Skirball Changing Exhibit Gallery. Community dialogue will continue through September, focusing on addressing contemporary unfreedoms. The exhibition's centerpiece is a collection of photographs, postcards and memorabilia that were taken at various lynching events in the United States in the early decades of the 20th Century. Shockingly, photographs taken at some of these murders were made into postcards and sent through the mail. Although the killings were not confined to a period, place, or race, an estimated 4,000 African-Americans were murdered by lynching between 1882 and 1968.
Without Sanctuary is an important milestone event in the Freedom Center's five-year history. The exhibition offers an unblinking look at a chapter of American history that many would prefer to forget. But the exhibition does something else: it pays homage to the victims of this virulent form of mob violence, while honoring those who fought to end lynchings and restore the rule of law. Without Sanctuary also serves as a warning that contemporary audiences must provide sanctuary today for those who are the victims of hate crimes, intimidation, and symbolic forms of oppression, such as the placement of nooses on doorways and offices. More information about the exhibition can be found on the Freedom Center website.
